Offshore Passages

Delivery from Annapolis, Maryland, to West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, July 2-5, 2007, as watch leader aboard PATRICIAN2, a Catalina-Morgan 440 sloop skippered and owned by Rick Thorpe. The voyage (a distance of approximately 550 nautical miles) was made non-stop in 4 days and 3 nights; on the third night out, we experienced winds blowing over 30 knots gusting to 40. Other crew included Mike McClane, Mickey Doran, Wendy Thorpe Allen, and Patricia Barry Thorpe (cook).

Delivery from West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, to Marblehead, Massachusetts, August 14-15, 2006, as skipper and owner aboard GREYHAWK, a Peterson 34 sloop. The rhumbline distance is about 100 nautical miles , but our actual sailing distance was about 145 nautical miles. The wind was on our nose the whole way, building to 25 knots with seas approaching 5 feet during the overnight. I was accompanied by two crew, Brent Scudder and Wally Bothner. Delivery from Annapolis, Maryland, to West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, June 25 to July 1, 2006, as skipper and owner aboard GREYHAWK, a Peterson 34 sloop. Significant offshore legs included (a) Cape May, New Jersey, to Marion, Massachusetts (about 260 nautical miles), during which conditions built to gale force winds on the beam and 12 foot breaking seas; and (b) Sandwich, Massachusetts, to West Boothbay Harbor, Maine (about 130 nautical miles). I was accompanied by five crew: Dan Allen, Rick Thorpe, Charlie Kerwin, Scott Murphy and Torrey Meeks. Details of this voyage are reported at http://members.acadia.net/catamount/Greyhawk/Delivery/

Delivery from Annapolis, Maryland to Wickford, Rhode Island, June of 2004, as crew aboard PATRICIAN, an Irwin 37 cutter skippered and owned by Rick Thorpe. The significant offshore leg was from Cape May, New Jersey, to Point Judith, Rhode Island (about 220 nautical miles). Other crew were Wendy Thorpe Allen, Denise Knobloch, Michael Doyle, and Morgan Doyle.

Voyage from Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Newfoundland, Canada, and back, June and July 2003, as navigator aboard DIAPENSIA , a Cape Dory 36 cutter skippered by Dan Allen and owned by Dan Allen and Natalie Davis. Significant offshore legs included (a) Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Isle Saint Pierre, France (about 750 nautical miles), (b) Grand Bruit, Newfoundland, to Sydney, Nova Scotia (about 125 nautical miles), and (c) Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire (about 360 nautical miles). Delivery from Rappahanock, Virginia, to Cotuit, Massachusetts, June 1990, as crew aboard DIAPENSIA, a Cape Dory 36 cutter skippered by Dan Allen and owned by Dan Allen and Natalie Davis. The significant offshore leg was from Cape May, New Jersey, to Block Island, Rhode Island (about 220 nautical miles). One other crew accompanied us, Neal Anderson.

Voyage from Saco, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (a distance of about 200 nautical miles), and back to Bar Harbor, Maine (a distance of about 140 nautical miles), July 1976, as crew aboard TUULI, a Paceship PY23 skippered and owned by Dan Allen. Other crew were Peter Allen and Bruce Allen.

Coastal Cruising Experience

Both Wendy and I grew up vacation cruising with our respective families, and have sailed and cruised extensively along the Maine and New Hampshire coasts, but also Massachusetts Bay, southern New England and eastern Long Island, as well as many inland lakes.

Racing Experience

skippered QUASAR, a San Juan 21, in the Cruising Canvas division of the 33rd annual Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta, July 14 & 15, 2007, sanctioned by the Gulf of Maine Ocean Racing Association. Finished the series 9th of 10 in the division.

Training and Related Experience

Safety at Sea Symposium, "Preparing for an Offshore Passage," Blue Water Sailing Club, Cambridge, MA, March 24, 2007 (both Wendy and Tim attended).

Red Cross Basic First Aid, certificiation through February 2010.

Red Cross Adult CPR and AEC, certification through February 2008.

Some Future Interests:

Return to Newfoundland for further exploration, and perhaps go on to Labrador and/or Greenland

Sail to Bermuda and back, perhaps either with a Marion-Bermuda race, Newport-Bermuda race, or a Bermuda 1-2 race. Other races of possible interest include the Marblehead-Halifax race, and other distance races in the Gulf of Maine.

Sail a North Atlantic Circuit during a year-long sabbatical leave.
